Alrighty. The entire disturbance of My Blog Moving lasted for whole four days – or two posts – and now this seems more deserted than if I were to write only for my desktop and this plant here. Just as well. Now I can write whatever I feel like, also in English, also about music, which I felt strangely reluctant to write about – maybe to keep a little privacy, or maybe to avoid endless discussions, because everybody thinks they have something really original and meaningful to say about music. Which is not to say it’s wrong, just tiring.

Anyway. Today’s quote comes from a book that’s so interesting I cannot stop reading it, about how technology influenced (and still influences) music:

One of the most basic manipulations is splicing, in which passages recorded at different times are joined together. The Beatles’ „Strawberry Fields Forever“ (1967) provides a famous example. The Beatles did over two dozen takes of the song, none of which completely satisfied John Lennon. But he did like the first half of Take 7 and the second half of Take 26. So he asked George Martin, their producer, to put the two together. Unfortunately, they were in different keys and tempos. The two takes, however, were related in such a way that when one was sped up and the other slowed down so that  the tempos matched, the pitches also matched. Thus the two takes could be joined, the splice occurring at about 0:59 on the word going in „Let me take you down ’cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.“ Although the splice is nearly undetectable, the slightly altered speed of Lennon’s voice helps give the song its distinctively dreamlike quality.

you can really hear it, this slight pitch alteration which always made this track so wonderfully out-of-tune, and now it turns out that what seemed like deliberate sound effect is in fact a consequence of a (lack of) studio recording technique. Amazing.

  2. ja imam utisak da se cuje tacno izmedju „going“ koje je ubrzano i „to“ koje je usporeno, kao da su „skupili“ prvi deo i „razvukli“ drugi

  3. mene to bas fascinira – zamisli koliko u ovom trenutku postoji tih napustenih mesta do kojih ne vodi nijedan link?

    ja ga jasno cujem, ali sam uvek mislila da su namerno malo izoblicili zvuk da mu daju taj neki …. izoblicen …. zvuk. kad ono, tehnologija tog vremena nije dozvoljavala bolje!
